Рассказывают, что однажды Бог решил осмотреть все свои творенья, и тогда на острове Ньюфаундленд, избиваемом штормом, увидел он маленький народ рыболовов, чьи люди суровые, привычные к непогоде мужественно сражались с природными трудностями, когда зимние морозы и беспощадный прибой брали свою дань или море требовало человеческих жертв. Несмотря ни на что, эти люди Ньюфаундленда упрямо цеплялись за жизнь, так велико было их мужество.

Бог глядел на них с бесконечным состраданием и думал, как облегчить их существование. Он искал среди всех созданных им тварей, но не находил никого, кто бы мог помочь этим людям. Тогда Он решил сотворить новое
существо.

Он взял тело медведя, чей костяк хорошо подходил бы для тяжелой работы и
чья густая шерсть могла бы противостоять пронизывающему холоду острова
Ньюфаундленд. Затем Он решил смягчить этот силуэт гибкими, подвижными
линиями морского льва с его превосходными способностями к плаванию и быстрому скольжению по волнам. Ну, а когда Он бросил взгляд на море, то увидел играющих дельфинов, весело плывущих за кораблем. Их ласковые, добрые глаза отражали открытый нрав. Более того - они так любили людей, что часто спасали их в море. Да, они тоже должны стать частью нового создания.

Потом он лепил, придавал форму, и вдруг из рук Творца появился великолепный зверь с блестящей черной шерстью, могучий и нежный одновременно. Это новое животное должно было обладать верностью и преданностью, быть испытанным и честным другом, чтобы жить рядом с человеком и быть готовым пожертвовать жизнью за своего хозяина.

И в то мгновение, когда Бог вложил в его грудь сердце собаки, это свершилось! С того дня люди моря имели рядом с собой
мужественного товарища, всегда полного сил, всегда верного ньюфаундленда!

The story goes, that once God has decided to examine all his creatures. And then on an Newfoundland island, beaten by storm, he has seen the small people of the fishers, whose people severe, habitual to bad weather courageously battled with natural difficulties, when the winter frosts and ruthless surf took tribute or the sea demanded human victims. In spite of on anything, these people of the Newfoundland obstinately clinged to life, so great their courage was.

The God looked at them with infinite compassion and thought how to facilitate their existence. He searched among all creatures, created by him, but did not find anybody, who could help these people. Then He has decided to create a new essence.

He took a body of a bear, whose skeleton did for heavy work and whose rich hair could resist to a penetrating cold of an Newfoundland island. Then He decided to soften this silhouette by floppy, mobile lines of sea-lion with his excellent abilities to swimm and fast sliding on waves. And when He has thrown a sight by the sea, he seen playing dolphins cheerfully floating behind the ship. Their tender, kind eyes reflected open customs. Moreover - they so loved the people, that frequently rescueed them in the sea. Yes, they too should become a part of new creation.

Then He moulded, gave the form, and suddenly from hands of the Creator the magnificent animal with a brilliant black hair, mighty and gentle simultaneously has appeared. This new animal should have a faithfulness and devotion, to be tested and honour friend to live near to the man and be ready to offer life for the owner.

And in that moment, when the God has enclosed in his breast heart of a dog, it has come to pass! Since that day the people of the sea had near to themselves the courageous comrade, always of complete forces, always faithfulness - the Newfoundland dog!
